A four-tonne oak tree which has been turned into a work of art to mark the transformation of Lister Hospital in Stevenage into the main acute hospital for east and north Hertfordshire has been unveiled. The oak tree in Lister’s main public car park was felled last year to make way for a new multi-storey car park. A competition asking sculptors to come up with a design for the tree trunk, which was run in The Comet last year, was won by artists Amanda Bonfiglioli and Godfrey Phillips. Estimated to be about 200 years old, and measuring nearly 10 metres by 1.2 metres across its widest part, the trunk has been crafted into a person, which will soon be holding a sun and moon to represent the 24-hour service at the hospital. The outdoor sculpture, which includes seating at its base, has been erected next to the hospital’s main entrance.
